The Ke’nekt Cooperative provides opportunities to assist people of color in all manner of things in downtown Atlanta. I got the opportunity to volunteer with PowerHaus Creative and help paint the “Black Lives Inspire” mural at their Atlanta location this past summer.
The source of inspiration for Atlanta High Rise Show in 2019 is the 1980 The Times Square Show in New York City. It was curated by ShowerHaus, the Goat Farm and Miya Bailey. My piece was a mini mural, based on Avonte Oquendo, the young autistic boy who eloped from school and several months later his remains were found in the East River in NYC. this mural was about the shattered lives of many kids and families with special needs.
The artist behind the Colin Kaepernick mural that was torn down last week led a charge to replace it with eight new ones in a Super Bowl Sunday effort he named the “KaeperBowl”. Yuzly Mathurin was the lead artist for one of the murals, and I was one of the volunteers who helped Yuzly bring her vision to life.
